Non-Return Valves – The Heart of the Plasticizing Unit
The non-return valve is one of the most critical components in any injection molding machine. It ensures secure closure during the injection phase and maintains a consistent melt cushion – the foundation for reliable, repeatable dosing and therefore consistent part quality.
Detecting Wear – Before It Becomes a Problem
Wear on non-return valves and nozzles occurs through two primary mechanisms:
- Abrasive wear – caused by the sliding motion of granulate or melt against the non-return valve, amplified by fillers such as glass fibers or minerals
- Corrosive wear – caused by chemical attack on the non-return valve from the plastic being processed
Early signs of wear often include streaks, black specks, or dark lines in the molded part, significant fluctuations in the melt cushion, and declining dimensional accuracy of the finished product. Regular inspection is therefore essential – undetected wear leads to defective parts, scrap, and unplanned machine downtime.
